After completing my primary work package for a Telco client of mine I was asked if I could help with performing an application assessment for the migration of c. 500 users and 30-50 installed applications PLUS a number of URLs. The previous way this had been done by a previous contractor was quite crude, exporting AD Users/Groups and Published Application information (which wasn’t that useful as many used published desktops). Fortunately having worked on a number of significant migrations across various sectors I was aware of SysTrack, but as with any client you cannot always get your own way without performing an element of due diligence.
This meant I needed to provide a scoping document complete with a method of product selection. Armed with the Citrix Ready Marketplace I started my selection of an assessment tool <example filter>.
My shortlist ended with three vendors, Liquidware, eG Innovations, Control Up & Lakeside SysTrack.
After evaluation this became a contest between Liquidware and Lakeside … Lakeside did however get across the line, primarily because the Telco owner was already evaluating it for a different piece of work with different requirements.
So onto the POC…
- Number of end points / users is less than 500
- Network requirements relatively simple 443
- Server 2016, 12GB Ram, 60GB System Disk, 20GB data disk
- Systrack Software and Eval License Key
- Service Account for Report Server
- Password for SQL Express install
- Optional – Client own SSL Cert (this actually makes the install a little more straightforward due to the installer generating its self-signed cert “after” the Report Server Configuration meaning you cannot configure the report server until installed
The server was deployed and configured using the clients standard build documents, sys track was installed following installation documentation. The only issue was the report server… but here is the command you need to run if you come across this issue

I have now added a couple of endpoints to assess and will update this post once I get more information captured…
I first came across IGEL a couple of years or so back when they might have been perceived to be just another of the many ‘thin client’ ‘terminal’ devices to reduce your endpoint unit costs. However things have moved on, plenty of new yet familiar staff from the world of EUC.
Looks great but come on guys can’t you get a prototype GUI out there for those not into PowerShell; Citrix have a better solution 😎

If like myself you find yourself are a creature of comfort it becomes increasingly frustrating that you have to find ways to get things back to the way you are familiar with; fixing things that you consider broken but others will say ‘you have to change with the times’.
What is it with UX Designers? Why do they feel the need to keep changing or moving things? Surely productivity improvements is a personal thing. I am all for new features and functionality (latest and greatest or whatever business bingo phrase your peers instil on you) but please let users have some choice in what we need and how we present it “EASILY” – I feel a simple setting to revert key productivity settings to an early version i.e. Win7 [ Start Menu ] or Office [x] would be welcomed by many as it reduces the time for users to transition to your new world.
It is not just Microsoft with their Metro, Ribbon Bars, Sharepoint integration; or Apple with their OSX/iOS updates.

This setting is one of those that are really frustrating to find.
Follow these steps to enable email pop-outs in Outlook 2016 settings:
- Go to File at the top menu of Outlook 2016
- Select: Options
- Then Mail tab on the left side menu
- Select section: Replies and forwards
- Check-mark option: Open replies and forwards in a new window
- Press OK button
There are many applications
that address users with assistive technology needs – whilst it may depend on the size of business it should never be underestimated.
How can it be overcome? As I get more involved and understand the topic more I will be updating this article. But essentially it is important to maintain equality throughout.
One of the most common and widely used pieces of software is Dragon Naturally Speaking. Nuance (the vendor) has a number of user based tasks on their support pages demonstrating how to migrate settings from legacy versions. The important issue with Dragon NS though is that if you have let your installed version(s) get a long way behind then you may need to have a two stage migration process.
Remember each and every user has a unique set of requirements and you try not to differentiate between users.
